Zeolite is a natural mineral, a volcanic rock with a high silicon content.

Zeolites trap calcium and magnesium ions and release sodium ions instead, so the water becomes softer but richer in sodium.

Ammonia (NH3) and heavy metal cations are often found in water sources and pose serious health and environmental risks. Studies have determined that naturally occurring clinoptilolite zeolite is selective for these cations, meaning it will absorb and bind them in its honeycomb structure, even in the presence of larger amounts of competing cations.
